Councillor Vows to Highlight Second Resignation From Pandemic-Halted Advisory Committee

The longest-serving member of a volunteer accessibility committee at city hall has quit, marking the second resignation in two months as the group’s meetings remain stalled at city hall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Michael Dawthorne resigned his post in an email to politicians after 10 years of service, warning councillors they could be found in violation of Ontario’s accessibility law and urging them to take disability issues more seriously.

London City Hall Accessibility Committee Chair Quits, Alleges Disability Law Violated

When London’s accessibility committee showed up in council chambers two years ago with resignation letters in hand, politicians promised change. But accessibility issues still aren’t taken seriously, advocates say, leading a longtime chairperson to resign her post and file complaints alleging city hall violated Ontario’s accessibility law.

City hall’s accessibility advisory committee hasn’t met since the start of the pandemic ” missing seven meetings so far ” and members say there’s been no reasonable explanation for the gap.

The Ford Government is enshrouding far too much secrecy around its approach to what will happen if the second wave of COVID-19 infections overloads Ontario hospitals, i.e. if there are not enough critical care beds to accommodate all the patients in critical condition. This could become a truly life and death issue.

AODA Alliance submits A Brief to Accessibility Standards Canada Listing the Federal Accessibility Standards We Need the Federal Government to Now Develop and Enact

SUMMARY

Last year, Canadas Parliament passed the Accessible Canada Act ACA. It requires Canada to become accessible to people with disabilities by 2040. It lets the Federal Government enact a series of enforceable federal accessibility standards. Those regulations would spell out what organizations within reach of the Federal Government must do to remove and prevent disability barriers.
