Councillor Vows to Highlight Second Resignation From Pandemic-Halted Advisory Committee

The longest-serving member of a volunteer accessibility committee at city hall has quit, marking the second resignation in two months as the group’s meetings remain stalled at city hall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Michael Dawthorne resigned his post in an email to politicians after 10 years of service, warning councillors they could be found in violation of Ontario’s accessibility law and urging them to take disability issues more seriously.

When London’s accessibility committee showed up in council chambers two years ago with resignation letters in hand, politicians promised change. But accessibility issues still aren’t taken seriously, advocates say, leading a longtime chairperson to resign her post and file complaints alleging city hall violated Ontario’s accessibility law.

City hall’s accessibility advisory committee hasn’t met since the start of the pandemic ” missing seven meetings so far ” and members say there’s been no reasonable explanation for the gap.


2019 Accessibility Award Winners Recognized

2019 Accessibility Award winners were recognized at a special ceremony in Sarnia Council chambers Monday afternoon.

The awards are given to businesses and individuals who have excelled in promoting an inclusive environment and shopping experience for people with disabilities.

RBC on Lambton Mall Road and Junior Baker are being recognized for creating an inclusive environment.


Huron County Making Progress With Accessibility Awareness

The Vice Chair of the Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee says the committee is one of the few in Ontario that actually gets involved in the community.

Speaking at an Accessibility event Wednesday in Clinton, Debbie Kerley pointed out they do site evaluations on a regular basis, strictly in an advisory role; look at their building plans; and if they’re doing renovations to an older building, they send them a report and recommend what they should do for best practice to make their place accessible.
