Three Developments in Our Quest for Internet and Telephone Voting to Promote Accessibility for Voters With Disabilities

SUMMARY

Here are three recent developments in our campaign to make elections in Ontario fully accessible for persons with disabilities:

* On November 17, 2011, Elections Ontario responded to our October 28 letter, in which we had asked for a progress report on internet and telephone voting. Elections Ontario defers most of our inquiries to the future.

Another Fiasco at the Voting Polls

I was wrong.

Occasionally in the past I’ve thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

This was not one of those times.

I was wrong when I gave Elections Ontario the benefit of the doubt about the organization of the 2011 vote.

I even bought into its advertising and wrote of hope the process would be improved because “they have branded themselves as an organization that is on top of the issues.”


Internet Voting in Advance Polls a Great Success in Markham, Report Finds

Internet voting in advance polls in Markham has helped increase overall voter turnout, engage non-voters to vote and greatly improve overall voter satisfaction, according to a research and public opinion report released Monday.


Local School Doesn’t Meet Accessibility Requirements for Election

Nottawa residents are being told to go to Ravenna to vote on Oct. 6 after Elections Ontario ruled their traditional polling station no longer meets the
province’s accessibility requirements.

Nottawa residents who voted at Nottawa Elementary School on Batteaux Road in previous elections are being directed to Ravenna Hall on election day.
